"Vista" and "Gusto": these are the new Michelin stars to shine in Portugal
The two Michelin stars awarded to Portuguese restaurants, just announced in Tenerife, on the Canary Islands, will be sent directly to the Algarve in the presentation of the 2018 edition of the most famous and influential gastronomic guide in the world.
The new starlets are the Vista restaurant, by the young chef João Oliveira, on Rocha beach, Portimão, and Gusto by Heinz Beck, one of the restaurants of Conrad Hotel Algarve, in Quinta do Lago, Almancil. The distinctions that came from the 2017 edition remain the same.
With these new awards, Portugal adds a total of 23 restaurants distinguished by Michelin, five of them with two stars. A situation that a few years ago could not be imagined in the best dreams, but that shows well the galloping evolution of Portuguese cuisine and gastronomy in recent times.
In relation to the novelties of this night, they are not even properly so, so long as they were. It can even be said that this is a kind of addition to the announcement of a year ago, when, then, both restaurants were singled out as news and given its almost guaranteed inclusion in the role of starlets. It was not last year but it was now.
Although he is only now in his thirties, João Oliveira can not be called a rookie. He was already at the Largo do Paço restaurant in Amarante, when Ricardo Costa regained the star, and then followed him to the challenge of starting with The Yeatman in Vila Nova de Gaia, where he watched the arrival of the first star but did not wait for the second for having moved to Vila Joya, that yes, already with two stars.
In 2015, he took on the challenge of starting with Vista at the Hotel Bela Vista, right on Rocha beach, and from the first steps the star was as advertised. It was necessary to know when, but after all, it was not necessary to wait long.
