Portuguese wines win 60 gold medals in IWC 2015

Port wines stood out with 34 medals.

Portuguese wines obtained 60 gold medals and 617 medals overall, in the International Wine Challenge (IWC).

The IWC considered that the Portuguese producers were "phenomenal" in the competition this year, even for being "unusual" to get this much gold medals.

The Alentejo and Madeira Wine Regions both won six gold medal, followed by the Douro and Dao, with five each, the Vinho Verde wines (2), and with a medal, Muscat Favaios (Douro) and other Moscatel from Setubal.

Altogether, Portugal won 617 medals at the IWC 2015. In addition to the gold medals, producers from Portugal still managed 223 silver and 334 bronze.

The wine Justino 'Madeira Boal 1934 stood out for being the older awarded gold in this competition, highlighted the IWC.

"These results show that Portugal is not only a country of fortified wines but also produces fantastic unfortified wines. The Douro Valley and Alentejo are two regions that make tremendous red and with whites getting better and better," said Charles Metcalfe, President of the Jury.

He also said that the Vinho Verde region also is producing "excellent white wines, with lots of flavor and less alcohol - perfect for the summer."

The competition, considered one of the most prestigious internationally, had two weeks of blind tastings in April in London, England, and every wine in this competition was "tasted at least twice" by the jury. Wines were awarded in 47 countries, some of them without great wine tradition.
