Quinta da Devesa Porto 40 Anos

“The 40-Year Old Port (technically +40, although that would have buggered up the search engine) has a clear, deep mahogany color, although there a little more reddishness here compared to the 30-Year Old. The nose is more volatile than the 30-Year Old – this is feisty and boisterous and refuses to act its age. I kind of like that and it soon calms down to offer aromas of balsam, cloves, shaved ginger, fig and marjoram. The palate is lively and bright with the right amount of VA to give it a kick without unbalancing the layers of spicy honeyed fruit. Nutmeg, orange rind, black pepper, tamarind and dried apricots toward the finish somehow evoke images of Morocco. Wonderful!”

“The 30-Year Old Porto is slightly deeper in color than the 10-Year Old. The nose is complex: balsam, dried honey, linseed and creme brulee, wood resin scents – all quite mercurial and ever-changing in the glass. The palate is smooth and harmonious, slightly more viscous and honeyed than the 10-Year Old, with great weight on the finish. There are heady allspice, clove and hazelnut notes here, touches of tamarind and white pepper following later. What a lovely 30-Year Old!”

“The 20-Year Old Porto has perhaps the less inviting and complex of the aromatics compared to others, never really getting out of second gear. The palate is taut, focused and accentuates those nutmeg and walnut notes to create something that takes a couple of steps towards Madeira. This is enjoyable, but personally, I would trade up to the longer-aged Ports.”

Quinta da Devesa Porto 10 Anos

“The 10-Year Old Porto has a mahogany core with a degraded tawny rim. The bouquet is clean and nicely focused, perhaps just missing a little intensity, with scents of burnt honey, molasses, dried fig and strong nutty aromas. The palate is smooth and harmonious, mellow in the mouth, gently building toward a caressing walnut, black pepper, bitter orange and marmalade finish, yet with a pleasant elderflower note poking its head above the surface on the aftertaste. I found this best served just a below room temperature.”
